Why does chiropractic work?
Our bodies are held up with a skeleton, held together with ligaments and tendons, and empowered with muscle that is told what to do by our nerves. Our nerves are protected in a casing that travels through our spine stretching from our brain to our extremities and organs, allowing us to feel various sensations. When our nerves are impaired due to skeletal misalignment for various reasons, pain, inflammation, and damage to the nerve and in some cases, organs, may be the result. Chiropractic wellness is based on the body's capacity to heal itself when proper alignment exists.
How does chiropractic work?
Through years of training and study, chiropractors have learned how to detect, locate, and correct misaligned skeletal structure. Chiropractors understand how pain originates and travels throughout the body, and how the central nervous system interacts with the endocrine system, effecting optimal organ function.
Your chiropractor will put you on a regimen of corrective care through spinal/skeletal manipulation and massage techniques that over time, will allow your body to heal itself.
What is subluxation?
Subluxation occurs when the spine is out of alignment and nerves are "pinched," resulting in pain and damage to normal activity of the nerve, which then effects the muscle, that goes on to effect bone placement in full circle.
Many times maintenance care is recommended long after the initial correction begins. Several components are necessary for subluxation, and only chiropractors are trained in detection, location, and correction of this injury. Basically, you can think of it like this:
1. Spinal misalignment
2. Resulting nerve damage
3. The nerves control the muscles, and the muscles hold the bone in place
4. Damage to soft tissue such as the blood supply, ligaments, or tendons
5. Biochemical abnormalities occur as a result of this damage.
How long will it take for my injury to heal?
The longer a subluxation exists, the more damage to nerves and organ system function and the longer it will take to heal.
Every body is different and everyone heals at different rates. Your immune system does play a role in your overall ability to heal, and so does your age and gender.
Are there different types of chiropractic care?
Yes, at Scherer Family Chiropractic, you choose from three levels of care, depending upon your needs: relief, corrective, and/or maintenance.
Relief care is all about the immediate relief necessary for pain relief and proper function.
Corrective Care: Generally, chronic hip and lower back pain can be traced back to an injury, or a dysfunctional repetitive movement. Many times, we are not even aware we move in a way that can cause injury. Depending on the length of time you have been experiencing your discomfort, your injury or misalignment may be easy or difficult to correct. Corrective care takes time; it's not an immediate fix. Thorough corrective care is necessary for your body to work optimally.
Maintenance Care: Your body may have become so used to behaving in a certain unhealthy manner that your muscles will require training to form new and healthy habits. This is especially true of lower back and hip pain. At Scherer Family Chiropractic, you will know just what to expect of your body as it heals, and with nutritional advice, proper rest, and continued chiropractic care, you will be on your way to an optimally performing you!
Skeletal maintenance is particularly important to the athlete. Repetitive injuries, overstressed muscles, and loss of elasticity can be quite uncomfortable. Establishing a relationship with your chiropractor is well worth the time. Come in and see us today.
How will I know when I'm finished receiving chiropractic care?
People say that once you start receiving care, you have to keep coming back forever. Is this true?
We believe it's important that you choose the level of care that's right for you. When you begin treatment, we'll talk with you about your options, including relief, corrective, and/or maintenance care.
Should I see a chiropractor for the pain in my lower back and hip?
Absolutely. It is imperative that we diagnose properly the causes of your lower back pain. It may feel like it's radiating down the hip, and could get worse if not treated.
I have shoulder pain, do I need a chiropractor?
Often it is not enough to simply treat the pain in the shoulder, the causes of the shoulder pain need to be eliminated along with corrective treatment. Pain is deceptive, it doesn't always originate where you think it does. You should make an appointment to see us.
How do you treat different types of headaches?
That varies according to the type of headache you are experiencing. Migraines, allergies, tension, poor alignment, and more all contribute to miserable headaches. Come in and talk to us about your particular situation and we will begin the treatment that is right for you. You don't have to be in pain.
